Blog Post 2 gp60, partial [Cryptosporidium parvum] Deborah Haney
What protein did you search for?
I searched the term “dairy goats” and came up with glycoprotien from
Cryptosporidium parvum.
Cryptosporidium parvum.
What specific protein did you select (be careful here – a search for insulin will
also give you results for insulin receptors and many other insulin-related molecules)?

Cryptosporidium parvum is an organism that causes goats to become ill, symptoms
being scours, weight loss, poor digestion, weakness, abdominal pain, not eating,
dehydration, fever, and death. It’s a protozoa that give similar symptoms as coccidia,
a common disease in goat kids under stress (like during weaning), but crypto doesn’t
respond to coccidiostats or any other medications currently licensed for goats. Crypto
is more common in calves than kids so many goat owners are unfamiliar with it but we
had a case with our first bottle baby. Fortunately, he is fine.

THESE GOATS ARE SO CUTEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! That is so sad to hear about the sick goats. Im curious if you know of any other medications that can solve the issue with Cryptosporidium parvum. I also was shocked that the article wasn't published until 2016. Meaning it is either recent or still evolving.
ReplyDeleteMy vet told me there was no medication for goats but there is for many other animals. She said we just had to wait it out and keep giving him fluids and electrolytes. We gave him Pedialyte everyday.
