Lab #4: BLAST-B by Tien Pham

For this assignment I selected a protein, an insulin partial, because I have a chinchilla that loves all kinds of treats, but chinchillas in general have a very sensitive digestive system which makes chinchilla unable to eat that much sugar. This included fruits like apples or pears; they are only able to eat a pinch or two a week because there are too much sugar in them. So I chose to look up the types of insulin in chinchillas to possibility farther understand why they are so sensitive to even the smallest amount of sugar.

The organism for which the protein insulin partial is located in the Chinchilla chinchilla (short-tailed chinchilla) and the Chinchilla lanigera (long-tailed chinchilla). Insulin decreases blood glucose concentration. It increases cell permeability to monosaccharides, amino acids and fatty acids. It accelerates glycolysis, the pentose phosphate cycle, and glycogen synthesis in liver.

  1. Chinchillas have always been a favorite of mine. Many animals that can be pets seem to have issues with eating sugars.
