Lab #4 - BLAST BY HANNAH FAIRCHILD
- The protein that I searched for was a prion protein, specifically found in a giraffe. I thought it would be intriguing to learn more about the protein that aids in metal ion binding and protein homooligomerization in organisms, specifically within giraffes. This protein is relevant to humans, and can become abnormals through conversion and denaturing as shown below.
- Specifically, I looked at the prion protein[Giraffa camelopardalis]. Prion proteins are also often referred to as PrP, for short, and this particular accession number was AF113942.

Awesome post Hannah. I have read before about the prion protein before, but in cattle, and I remember that it causes mad cow disease when it denatures and it can spread to humans somehow. It's good to know that giraffe have the same protein and they are susceptible to this disease.
ReplyDeleteGreat Post Hannah, I chose Prion protein as well but a different one -- seems like. I have never heard of it until this alb and its really fascinating what the prion protein can do to your body.
ReplyDeleteInformative and very well put together, what difficulties does it cause in giraffes though if it becomes denatured?
ReplyDeleteGreat post Hannah, it’s very interesting to know about Prion protein which I didn’t know before. I should do more research about it and how it relates to human. Thank you so much for introducing the Prion protein to us.
ReplyDeleteHi Hannah, it is really interesting to learn and know about prion protein. I like how you include the picture of prion protein conversion to the abnormal protein. Thank you for you post and information .
