Preference by Movement in the Pill Bug as a Dietary Preference By Darsi Fouillade and Lauryn Newman
Preference by Movement in the Pill Bug, Armadillidium vulgare, as a Dietary Preference Mechanism
- The names of the people in our research project group are Lauryn Newman and Darsi Fouillade
- For our research project we are hoping to find out if pill bugs prefer lipid(potato chip) or carbohydrate (leaf) based foods. And how the effects of adding sugar, oil and vinegar affect their diet preferences.
- Our prediction is that since pill-bugs from our research prefer things that they are used to and found in their environment and are sensitive to specific odors and tastes that the Pill bugs will choose carbohydrates(leaf) over the lipids(potato chip) and we also predict that the pill bugs will prefer the sugar added to their food preference rather than Oil, or Vinegar.
- We decided to do this experiment because we had done a previous experiment concerning levels of soil moistness and we wondered if food would impact their decision and if so what food would be the most appealing to the pill bugs and in what condition.
- We have not begun our experiment quite yet still in the proposal stage our only issue has been initially finding more group members other than the two of us. But other than that no other challenges.
- 3 resources that we have found to help our experiment are https://www.scribd.com/doc/218543404/Feeding-Behaviour-Pill-bugs-Response-To-Taste-And-Odor
Hey guys, I like the concept of your experiment. Since humans like to litter food like chips, it will be cool to see if the pill bugs would still prefer their natural food or the chips inside the chambers. How are you gauging how much they like it. Is it just how much is left after the experiment or is there a different way you have of determining it. Besides that, I think this will be an interesting project to see the results of.
ReplyDeleteHey, I was wondering why there were chips inside the lab & suggested we open them & eat them (just kidding). A lot of people- such as our own group, is doing how Pill bugs and different fertilizer or pesticide affects them so its interesting how you guys are doing food. Like Azeem said above, a lot of people do litter & it would be interesting to see how that plays out. It would be also interesting if you guys tried decomposed apples that have already been eaten or brown banana peels too! good luck.
ReplyDeleteHello! Very interesting proposal! While trying to figure out what we should do with our experiment my group and I briefly discussed doing something with sugar to see how isopods react to sugar. It will be interesting to read about what happens in the experiment! Good luck and great post!
ReplyDeleteAs my colleagues above stated, I am curious to see how the pill bug will react since they mostly feed
ReplyDeleteoff a decaying materials found in soil. How will you introduce the food source, by choice chamber, isolated environments, or both? I think this experiment is great to test out how waste create by humans can affect the food source for pill bugs; does litter mask over better feeding source for pill bugs? Best wishes for your experiment.
Hey, this is a really interesting experiment because I never considered the idea that bugs might like other foods outside their norm. It would also be interesting to know if the random foods like chips we through outside would cause pill bugs to gather in that area or not. It is concerning that the vinegar might actually kill the pill bugs though and it would be a fun to see if they can get fat off chips. I am curious to see how you guys will apply the substances and how or if you will measure the amount they have eaten.
