Campus Community Farm Work Parties

1.
The service learning I attend is the Campus Community Farm Work Parties on Friday, February 16.
This activity lasts for 3 hours from 12:00 to 15:00.
The contact email for this activity is Nhu.tran@edmail.edcc.edu.
2.
This activity is sponsored by the department of Anthropology, CSEL and the goal is to let us learn about planting.
3.
There was a group of volunteers and the main duty for us is to set up the campus farm for a campfire party held later in the day.
4.
Through setting up the site for the meeting, I suddenly realize that I have forgotten the purpose of science.
Before this service learning, I choose to further my study in science just because they are fun and I seems to be better in them.
However, in the campfire meeting, a man shared his story with us.
He told us that he used to have campfire every night and the things they would do in a campfire meeting.
That day is cold for me that even after working, I did not feel warm.
“Having campfire brings people together.”
This is a thought that can be understand easily, this is also a place where people communicate.
However, I have not thought about that in science too.
The ultimate goal of science should be improving the world from scientific understanding.
Before doing science experiments, thinking through the impacts that the experiment brings to the environment is also as important as having an scientific impact.
What science can give should not be destruction to the earth, should be sustainability instead.
5.
Can we add a session introducing the farm next time?
What is the original purpose of the farm?
What is grown there?
There are different areas to grow different plants, what condition is controlled there and why?

  1. Hello, seems like quite the fun. I have volunteered for the community farm last quarter to help grow plants, but I did not know they held parties there. I agree with you that its important to think about the scientific impact and understanding to both help save money and most importantly the earth. In most cases, I would chose sustaining the earth over understanding because there's no way to understand without earth. As for your questions, the original purpose of the farm was to teach students how to produce food in an urban environment with limited land given at home, as well as provide locals with fresh veggies.

  2. Hi! I also volunteered at the campus farm. It was also very cold on the day I was there. We also built a campfire. I agree with you that when doing a scientific experiment we need to think about its importance and how it would impact the community. As a member of the scientific community, it is important to work together to help spread the understanding of the natural world and help to improve the life of people around world.

  3. Sounds like a really cool experience. I did the campus farm for my service learning last quarter and it was not quite the experience you had. I would've loved to hear other people's stories around a campfire and hear how something like a campfire can bring a community together. I like what you said about science being about improving the world.
