Heart Campus conversations
Heart Campus conversations Event by Amina Nur
For my service learning I participated in What
Can we Learn form #MeTOO? in Wednesday Feb 7th, 2018, 3:00PM-4:00PM.
What Exactly is a Healthy Relationship? in the next Wednesday Feb 14th, 2018, 3:00PM-4:00PM. Both event were held at Lynnwood Hall (LYN) room 211, and organized
by Katy Griffin katy.griffith@email.edcc.edu
. Sponsored by EdCC Healthy Relationships Team & Center for
Service-Learning. The purpose of “What can we learn from #MeTOO?” was to talk about
what we can learn from the victims of harassment and elaborate on how EdCC is
working on preventing harassment and abuse on our campus. The purpose of “What
exactly is a healthy relationship?” was to talk about a recipe of a healthy
relationship which includes 6 key ingredients (communication, respect,
boundaries, decision making, trust, and consent).
In the first event, I was asked to share my
answers to some of the questions posted on the wall. Like how do you know the
#MeToo movement? Then elaborate about
these questions in one big discussion with the whole class, and listen to other
people who wanted to be heard and let them lead the discussion and give them a
platform to inform us how they cope with harassment. Most importantly define
harassment, and also provide the resources to facilities the healing process.
Also the event, provided me and the victims a closed and private conversation
and consultation and intervention if needed. In the second event, I was in a
group of two to the ingredient of healthy relationship. My group choose to discuss
about decision making, then explain it and define to the whole class in one
open discussion at the second half of class. We were advised to talk about the
assigned element to a healthy relationship before we look at the given
definition to test our knowledge.
In the Animal Kingdom humans form a huge part of it, and
they are closely related to the chimpanzees, and the
gorillas. Humans have evolved throughout the years, and they are still evolving
due to the increased rate of mutation in their genome. Overtime, humans have
changed the physical, chemical, and biological environment of Earth. Therefore,
raising the awareness about harassment and promoting for a healthy
relationship, is essential for plant earth. Most human beings live in a community
were they interact with each other on daily bases. Unfortunately, mostly women experience
inappropriate forms of communication in the form of harassment at work place, or abusive
relationships. Women experiencing harassment on the long term this can alter their psychology,
and they can also become withdrawn from the society. This Also can minimize the role
of women in the science field and decrease the rate of progression of science
in our society. With harassment, women will lose trust in men, and that might affect
their attraction to the opposite sex and can result in significant reduction in
the reproduction rate. That’s why biology is interdisciplinary. In order to for biologist
to observe human reproduction rate and behavior they have to understand their psychology
and communication, and differenciate between what is appropriate and what’s not. Knowing all that will help them evaluate and explain the changes in human race.
Questions based on #MeToo Movement:
What does the #MeToo movement mean to you?
What have you heard about the me too
movement?
Questions based on Healthy Relationship:
What are the gray areas of consent?
How do you know if both partners participated
equally in decision making?
Hey Amina! I really truly enjoyed reading your post and it made me wish that I attended this too. I think in todays society people get really confused and don't understand the basics and rights of a true relationship. People often times think that just because they're in a relationship and they love that person- that sexual harassment and negativity is fine. In reality you can actually be apart of a relationship that becomes very tough and hard to get out of because of the harassment.I totally am for the #METOO movement, but I think we should also understand that men undergo sexual harassment as well. Men being sexually harassed is not shown in the light at all. Women for too long have been sexually harassed everywhere; from the street to the workplace (which is not cool at all in both scenarios and in between). I know that every woman at once has been looked at or talked to in a badly mannered way. It never sits well. It never will. I hope people can take from this movement the differences of the timing and setting of whats right and whats not right to say.
