Helping Hands Veterinary Clinic
The reason I went to the clinic was to help out where I could and learn.
I usually do whatever needs to be done. This time it was unwrapping syringes for use, preparing fecal kits, putting together rabies tags packets, folding laundry, and cleaning kennels.
Photographer (and dog owner): Aubrey Mills
The dog in the photo is a chihuahua named Lady. She was dropped off and abandoned at the clinic a few days before, dehydrated, toothless, underweight, and old with diarrhea. She was adopted by Aubrey, a vet tech, and is now rehydrated, diarrhea-free, and gaining weight. She wears a sweater for warmth.

Veterinary medicine is an integral part of public health and safety. Spaying and neutering reduces the number of stray animals, and vaccinating for rabies (as is legally required in this state for all cats, dogs, and ferrets) helps keep people safe from diseases and attacks. Not to mention, there are more pets than people in this country and someone has to keep them healthy. Little things like doing laundry and cleaning cages are necessary to run any clinic. This event highlights the reasons I want to be a veterinary ichthyologist. Working for an aquarium would be an ideal way to promote conservation and study the habits and health of fish and other animals in the Pacific Northwest. I could also investigate the health of local lakes and the impact people (hikers, campers, sailors, fishers, etc.) have on freshwater environments. That would likely combine veterinary medicine, marine biology, oceanography, and environmental science, all for the betterment of society.
Provide at least 4 questions that were raised based on your service learning activity.
1 at what point should an animal go to the vet?
2 what risk factors affect the preventative care for pets in this area?
3 can pets have emotional disorders such as depression or anxiety with no cause (not grieving or abuse) like people, and is anything short of sedatives an effective treatment?
Is there/should there be a way to vaccinate wild animals like raccoons, bats, and feral cats through edible or arisolized vaccines or shots in a dart gun? Could something like that be cost effective?
Hello! First I'd like to say this is a very well written post. Having a dog myself, whenever she gets sick, were always worried about the severity of what she might have. I'd also like to say no job is too small, everything is important!
ReplyDeleteDeborah, thank you so much for volunteering with our animals, it always makes me happy when I see people who are passionate about animals because I love them. What made you want to become involved in working with aquatic life? Have you volunteered anywhere that specializes in aquatic life?
ReplyDeleteHey Deborah,
ReplyDeleteThats awesome that you want to get veterinary work. Do you think that the work we are doing right n ow will help you later down the line in your career path. Also you want to monitor the health of the lakes. What do you think the first step would be to furthering research on this line of work. I would probably first look at what people before me did. But what about you, what do you think?
Overall good post.
