Leadership is You Conference
Leadership is YOU Conference
The organization that put this conference on were Housing and Center for Student Engagement and Leadership. The organizer of the event, who can verify my attendance is Jeremy Snyder. He can be reached at jeremy.snyder@email.edcc.edu. This conference took place on January 26th, 2018 from 12 am to 5 pm on EDCC campus.
I was in charge of leading a workshop titled Love is Mutual. Difference is Key. I also was on a panel with seven other leaders on campus to answer questions from student attendees.
I volunteered for five hours at this conference. I ran, Love is Mutual. Difference is Key. for 45 minutes. The mission for this workshop was to help others realize being different is acceptable and even if you disagree with someone they still deserve respect, but you do not have to be friends with them.
The goals of the event were to motivate students to get involved in leadership roles around campus.
The theme of this conference was Creating the World We Want. The keynote speaker was Erin Jones. She told her story of growing up on the east coast as a black woman. She is the only black woman to run for statewide office.
After hearing her story, it really impacted me and even changed my workshop a little. I told more of my background than I had intended to. As a Homo Sapien I was very touched by her speech.
Homo Sapiens, being in the phylum Chordata were being impacted during this conference. Evolution of society is dependant on Homo Sapiens as was constantly hinted at during the course of the day.
Questions
Why are some people more engaged than others?
How did I get everyone that attends my workshop engaged because it seems like some people are not listening?
Why did the organizers decide to cut the forty-five minute panel down to fifteen minutes?
How can I improve on my speaking skills for next year's conference?
Hi Robert! This conference sounds amazing! I think bringing students into leadership gives them a sense of inclusion with their community and school. I like that you mentioned evolution in a different way than whats been mentioned in class.
ReplyDeleteHey Robert, I'm glad I stumbled upon your service-learning post! It's really different and gets you thinking. I totally agree with the concept that you don't have to be friends with someone that has different views than you, but having mutual respect with one another can help a lot. In todays society, many people don't think before they say or do something, which can ruffle some feathers. To answer one of your questions- I don't think some people were probably into that exact topic. I've realized that if someone is truly interested in a topic and wants to learn, that they listen and do their best. When they're not interested, they just sit and stare. Anyways, this was a very different and nice topic :) good luck with future conferences!
